Onions In Air Fryer
I love onions and I never had that childhood fussy moment of complaining that onions were in my dinner. The opposite of my dad, who still to this day, will only eat onions if they are blended in his food.
Jorge at 4 is debating whether this will be a fussy thing for him too. I have to refrain from laughing when he asks about his dinner and Dominic his dad says its not onions, just a special grated cheese. And then he eats them all, saying how yummy they are.
My favourite way to enjoy fried onions is over air fryer hot dogs, but you might have your own way of enjoying them.
While we were making a batch of our hot dogs, I said to Dominic that we should be doing these onions in the air fryer. It will save time and it can be a preheat for the hot dogs and then we can load the fried onions over.
We then set to work, testing and then making changes before we were happy with these onions in air fryer.
Can You Cook Onions In Air Fryer?
Yes you can! The air fryer is fantastic for cooking onions, you just need to get your head around how much extra virgin olive oil to use and how long and at what temperature to cook your onions.
As this is what happened with our air fryer onions when we did them for the first time:
We had followed a recipe we had found in Google and the cook times were way off.
My opinion is, to do slightly less, as you can always add air fryer onion cook time, but you can never take away.
Then you have the frustration of making another batch of onions.
Air Fryer Whole Onion
You are probably curious if you can cook an air fryer whole onion. Well, I have done it in the shape of an air fryer blooming onion, and it was great fun.
I had never had a blooming onion until then and it made me want to make it again and again, especially for lazy Netflix nights.
Sauteed Onions In Air Fryer
Cooking air fryer fried onions is super easy:
- Slice your onions
- Load into a bowl with extra virgin olive oil + any seasoning
- Toss the onions with the oil + seasoning with your hands
- Load into the air fryer
- Air fry + serve
There is a little bit more to air fryer sauteed onions but that is the basics.
How Long Do You Sauté Onions?
The air fryer onions need to be air fried for 12 minutes. This ensures that you have that wonderful sauteed crisp on the onion, but without them being overcooked.
I also recommend a basket shake as this helps make sure that you have an overall crispy finish and not just one small bit of onion.
I also recommend that you spray with some extra virgin olive oil after shaking your onions. This will help crisp up the onions even more.

Notes
Quantities. Avoid filling the air fryer past the ¾ mark. As the onions will stick together and you wont have a wonderful crisp on them.
Flavour. You can also season your onions to match what you are using your onions for. Such as cajun seasoning if making cajun egg bites.
