Summary

  • Few survivors from Oceanic Flight 815 made it out alive by the end of Lost's present-day timeline.
  • Jack Shephard's death marked the end of the series, but some survivors remained on the island or left via Ajira Airways Flight 316.
  • Hurley, Kate, Sawyer, Claire, Rose, Bernard, and others had different fates, with some finding peace on the island.

Warning: This article contains spoilers from Lost.By the end of Lost's present-day timeline, few of Oceanic Flight 815's survivors remained alive. After Oceanic 815 crashed, and its pilot, Seth Norris, was killed by the Smoke Monster soon after, of the 324 passengers onboard, there were 49 survivors from the middle section of the plane, including 48 humans and Vincent the dog. While they were presented as the sole survivors of the crash in Lost season 1, season 2 revealed that there were also 22 survivors from the tail section of the plane.

From tragic betrayals to heroic sacrifices, most of these survivors perished by the end of Lost's present timeline, with Jack Shephard being the final character seen dying when the series ended with him closing his eyes. Many of the survivors were seen reuniting in the flash sideways long after they had all died, but a handful of the Oceanic 815 survivors still lived in the present timeline following Jack's death. These final survivors either stayed on the island or left it for good via Ajira Airways Flight 316.

The Best Episode Of Lost Is Missing All But 2 Characters Who Crashed On The Plane

Lost's all-time best episode surprisingly drops all but two of the main cast members who first crashed on the show's mysterious island.

8 Hugo "Hurley" Reyes

Played By: Jorge Garcia

While Jack became Jacob's immediate successor as guardian of the island, Hurley became the long-term successor to this position. Jack was only the guardian long enough to ensure that the Man in Black was finally defeated, and the island was made safe again. He then passed the torch onto Hurley, emphasizing that Hurley always had a knack for taking care of others, making him the perfect individual to take care of the island and its remaining inhabitants.

In the season 2 episode "Everybody Hates Hugo," when Hurley was put in charge of the limited food supply in the Dharma Initiative's Swan hatch, he demonstrated his leadership and compassion by making sure every survivor had their own food item to enjoy.

With help from Ben Linus, Hurley immediately used his position to help others. He started by sending Desmond home instead of keeping him on the island, and in the series epilogue "The New Man in Charge," Hurley temporarily left the island to bring Walt Lloyd back, knowing that the island was where Walt belonged. In the flash sideways, Ben said, "You were a great number one, Hugo," suggesting that Hurley's time as the island's guardian was overall successful.

7 Kate Austen

Played By: Evangeline Lilly

When Oceanic 815 crashed, Kate was a detained fugitive being taken back to the United States by U.S. Marshal Edward Mars. Along with Jack, Hurley, Sayid Jarrah, Sun-Hwa Kwon, and Claire Littleton's son Aaron, who was born on the island in the weeks after the crash, Kate was one of the Oceanic Six, a group who escaped the island and made it back to civilization later in the series. All the members of the Oceanic Six, except for Aaron, decided to return to the island for varying personal reasons.

Kate's reason for returning was to find Claire, as she felt guilty about Claire having been left behind and that she had raised Aaron without his mother. After convincing Claire to come with her, Kate left the island aboard the repaired Ajira Flight 316 plane. Kate was the only member of the Oceanic Six to leave the island on Ajira 316, and presumably helped Claire reconnect with and raise Aaron after mother and son were finally reunited, although Kate might have encountered legal issues upon returning, since she violated her ten-year probation deal and left the state of California.

6 James "Sawyer" Ford

Played By: Josh Holloway

During the three years in which the Oceanic Six were gone, Sawyer and the others with him on the island found themselves jumping through time, until they ended up in 1974. From 1974-1977, Sawyer built a life as James LaFleur, who became the head of the Dharma Initiative's security, and fell in love with Juliet Burke. That life was upended when Jack, Kate, Hurley, and Sayid returned to the island in 1977, leading to Juliet's tragic death, and all the Oceanic 815 survivors returning to the present in 2007.

Given how he had changed and grown as a person during his years on the island, Sawyer likely decided to meet his daughter, Clementine, for the first time when he returned to civilization.

After enduring many losses, Sawyer was one of the few who made it onto Ajira 316 and escaped the island for good. Given how he had changed and grown as a person during his years on the island, Sawyer likely decided to meet his daughter, Clementine, for the first time when he returned to civilization. Before the crash, he refused to ever meet Clementine, although he did set up a bank account in her name that he had money deposited into for his daughter's future.

5 Claire Littleton

Played By: Emilie De Ravin

In the three years following the Oceanic Six's absence, Claire remained on the island and was corrupted by the Man in Black, who convinced her that the Others were holding her son, Aaron, captive. Claire spent these years living in the jungle, building traps, and killing Others as she became consumed with anger and a need for vengeance. After being reunited with some of her fellow Oceanic 815 survivors, Claire learned that Aaron had actually escaped the island and had been raised by Kate for the past three years.

Christian Shephard was not only Jack's father, but was also revealed to be Claire's father, making Claire and Jack half-siblings.

When given the opportunity to finally leave the island and see her son again, Claire initially refused, feeling scared that she was too far gone to be a good mother to Aaron anymore. Kate eventually convinced her, emphasizing that she would help Claire, and the two of them boarded Ajira 316. Claire was presumably reunited with Aaron, with both her and Kate working together to raise him, perhaps with support from Claire's mother as well, who took care of Aaron when Kate returned to the island.

4 Rose & Bernard Nadler

Played By: L. Scott Caldwell & Sam Anderson

While both Rose and Bernard survived the Oceanic 815 crash, they were separated and did not reunite until season 2. They were seated in the middle section of the plane, but Bernard went to use the restroom shortly before the crash, leaving him among the tail section's 22 survivors, while Rose was among the middle section's 49 survivors. Shortly after reuniting, Bernard was fixated on finding a way home, and even attempted to build a sign out of rocks that he hoped would be spotted by an aircraft or satellite.

Many of the survivors died during the time jumps, but Bernard and Rose built a peaceful life for themselves from 1974-1977, away from all the drama on the island, and they continued this lifestyle when they were transported back to the present in 2007.

When Rose revealed to Bernard that the island had healed her cancer and that she wanted to stay, Bernard agreed that they would never leave, and that they would stay on the island forever. Many of the survivors died during the time jumps, but Bernard and Rose built a peaceful life for themselves from 1974-1977, away from all the drama on the island, and they continued this lifestyle when they were transported back to the present in 2007. They were still on the island when Lost ended, and likely spent the rest of their years there, enjoying their well-deserved peace.

3 Cindy Chandler, Zack, & Emma

Played By: Kimberly Joseph, Mickey Graue, Kiersten Havelock

Other than Bernard, Cindy, Zack, and Emma were the only known tail section survivors still alive at the end of Lost's present-day timeline. Cindy was one of Oceanic 815's flight attendants while Zack and Emma were young children traveling without their parents. During the tail section survivors' first night on the island, Zack and Emma were taken by the Others, and several weeks later, when the remaining tail section survivors journeyed across the island to join the middle section survivors, the Others took Cindy as well.

Cindy helped look after Zack and Emma, and the three of them acclimated to being among the Others' community. When Charles Widmore's freighter came to the island, they joined the Others at the Temple overseen by Dogen, and stayed there for the next three years. They left the Temple when the Man in Black threatened to kill all who remained behind, but they survived the conflict between the Man in Black and his adversaries and continued living on the island.

2 Walt Lloyd

Played By: Malcolm David Kelley

Prior to the Oceanic 815 crash, Walt lost his mother, Susan Lloyd, to cancer, while his stepfather, Brian Porter, did not want to continue raising him. Walt was taken in by his father, Michael Dawson, who had not been allowed to see Walt since he was a very young child. More trauma awaited Walt on the island, not only because of the crash, as he was kidnapped by the Others, and was only able to leave the island after Michael made a deal with the Others, which resulted in Michael killing Ana Lucia Cortez and Libby Smith.

This Lost Season 2 Mystery Frustrates Me More Than Any Other Unanswered Question

Lost was a beloved series that was filled with many unanswered questions at the end, but one glaring mystery is still frustrating, 14 years later.

Walt had a special connection to the island and exhibited extraordinary abilities, but he spent years unable to talk with anyone about this, or about what he experienced and endured on the island. In the series epilogue "The New Man in Charge," Walt was now a patient at the Santa Rosa Mental Health Institute, but Ben came to visit him and convinced him to come back to the island. Ben told Walt that Michael needed his help, and Walt willingly left. Hurley also told Walt that the island was where he had always belonged and offered Walt a mysterious job there.

1 Vincent

Played By: Madison The Dog

Vincent is the final living survivor shown in Lost's present-day timeline. The series began with Jack opening his eyes and waking in the jungle where he saw a dog, later revealed to be Vincent, running past him. The series ended with Jack dying in the jungle in the same spot where he awoke after the crash years earlier, with Vincent lying down next to him this time, proving that despite Jack's frequent saying, "Live together, die alone," he would not die alone after all.

Even though Vincent was Walt's dog, he was taken care of by many survivors throughout his time on the island. Before he left with Michael on the raft, Walt gave Shannon Rutherford the responsibility of looking after Vincent. After the flaming arrows during the time jumps, Vincent spent the next three years with Rose and Bernard, and he probably lived out the rest of his days with the loving couple as they lived out the rest of their years on Lost's island.
